Why do we need to eat high in protein food?

Proteins are essential nutrients that play an important role in our bodies. They are the building blocks of cells, tissues and organs and are involved in many functions in our body. High in protein foods contribute to the growth and maintenance of muscle mass and are important for bone composition. It’s therefore important to get enough protein daily.

How much protein do you need?

The daily requirement of protein can vary and depends on your age, gender, body weight, physical activity and health goals. In general, it’s recommended that adults get about 0.8 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day. This means that if you weigh 70 kilograms, for example, you should eat about 56 grams of protein a day.

For people who go to the gym a lot, or do other forms of intensive exercise, the protein requirement may be higher. It’s often recommended to consume between 1.2 and 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day to support muscle growth and muscle recovery. As a vegan, you can get enough protein through plant-based sources such as soy milk, plant-based protein powders, hemp seeds, chia seeds, quinoa, beans, lentils, tempeh and nuts. A vegan protein powder can also be a godsend, as you can prepare a plant-based shake full of protein in no time.
