What is a pre workout?

A pre workout is designed to give you an extra boost of energy, focus and stamina to help you push through intense workouts. They typically come in powder, tablet or capsule form and contain caffeine, creatine, beta alanine, BCAAs or other ingredients depending on the product.

Is a pre workout safe to use?

As with any sports nutrition supplement, a pre workout is safe if you follow the instructions and take as part of a healthy, balanced diet. Check the amount of caffeine in your pre workout and try not to consume too much each day (up to 400mg per day is recommended).

When should I take pre workouts?

The best time to take a pre workout is around 30-60 minutes before training. Recommended doses vary by brand and product, so it’s important to read the instructions on the packaging.

Can I take a pre workout every day?

For healthy adults, up to 400mg of caffeine per day is safe. This is equivalent to about 5 cups of coffee or two cans of energy drinks. So, be careful when combining your pre workout with caffeine-rich products.  Many prefer to not take a pre workout every day, however, since the desired effects can diminish as the body gets used to it.

It’s also important to remember that pre workouts are no substitute for a healthy lifestyle and balanced diet. They should only be used as a valuable addition to your fitness routine.

What ingredients are in a pre workout?

A pre workout can contain many different ingredients. The most common include:

Caffeine

It probably comes as no surprise that caffeine is included in many pre-workouts. Caffeine is a substance that increases alertness and improves concentration*.  It’s also found in coffee, black tea and cola.

Creatine

A daily intake of 3 grams of creatine increases physical performance in successive bursts of short-term, high-intensity exercise. You can find quality creatine supplements as well as a pre-workout that already contains creatine.

B vitamins

B vitamins contribute to a healthy energy-generating metabolism and the reduction of tiredness and fatigue. Specifically, we’re talking about vitamins B2, B3 and B12. You can find these primarily in animal products and cereals and they’re often added to a pre workout.

Magnesium

Magnesium has a beneficial effect on reducing fatigue and tiredness. It activates your natural energy in the body, and can help reduce lack of energy. This makes magnesium a common mineral in a pre-workout supplement.
