Top tips to get ready for Summer

It’s almost time for summer, and just like you, we’re ready to get out there and enjoy it to the max. We’re all looking forward to spending time with family and friends, enjoying holidays in the sun, going to festivals and picking up a new sport. It's time to make it YOUR SUMMER. YOUR FIT. So, here's our top 5 things you can do to enjoy everything the sunny season has to offer. Let the countdown begin!

5… Create a summer bucket list

One of our favourite ways to get pumped for the summer is to write down all the things we want to do and achieve. Spontaneous days out are great and there’s nothing like lazing around in the park, but making a bucket list is a great way to plan your summer and look forward to fun and active times ahead.

4... Up your exercise routine before it gets too hot

We all know how tough it is to work out in the blistering heat. Not only that, there’s more chance of dehydration and sun burn. Try pushing yourself that little bit harder now so you can take things easier when the temperatures rise. Take that extra class, squeeze in some extra cardio, or add some extra weight to your usual sets and reps. You’ll feel less pressure to train as much in the summer and have more time to enjoy yourself in other ways.

3... Put together a playlist with your favourite summer tunes

Whether you’re into old school classics from years gone by or the latest hits from your favourite artists, putting a playlist together can really get you fired up for a feel-good summer. Try making one for different occasions — workouts, relaxing in the park, or hanging out with friends — and remember to keep adding to it so it doesn’t get old. Grab some inspiration from our very own Spotify playlists and share your top tracks on our socials!

2... Plan your summer BBQ using healthy seasonal foods

If you find yourself having a slow day at work, start planning your summer BBQ recipes. It’ll be less stressful than organising everything when the time comes, plus it’s great fun if you’re a foodie. In summer, there’s an abundance of healthy foods in season that you can grab fresh from the farmer’s market. Here are a few of our top picks to look out for:

Watermelon

This deliciously refreshing, sweet and juicy fruit is 92% water, making it a great way to stay hydrated during hot days. It’s also packed with nutrients, including vitamin A, vitamin C and antioxidants. Enjoy on it’s own or chop into cubes and throw it in a salad with feta cheese and cucumber. You can even craft your own fresh watermelon cocktails, mocktails and smoothies to really impress your friends.

Salmon

Rich in Omega 3 fatty acids, protein and vitamins, Salmon makes a lighter yet equally tasty alternative to red meat and goes great on the BBQ. The naturally occurring long chain fatty acids found in salmon (and other oily fish) are thought to contribute to a healthy heart. Grill it with some lemon and rosemary and serve with leafy greens. Alternatively, you can use to make burgers mixed with a hint of soy sauce, ginger and coriander for a unique take on the classic beef burger.

Blueberries

Blueberries are one of the most nutrient-rich berries and are often regarded as a superfood. They’re packed with fibre, vitamin C, vitamin K and other important nutrients like manganese, which contributes to a normal energy-yielding metabolism. Scatter a handful around this perfect sweet charcuterie board for a dessert that just keeps on giving.

Corn

Grilled corn is a quintessential part of the Summer BBQ and a source of many antioxidants, minerals and vitamins, including A, B, E, and K. It’s also super versatile. It can be used to make cereals, tortillas and, of course, popcorn. Make your own or get stocked up on Body&Fit Smart Popcorn to enjoy that sweet and salty flavour with less of the calories.

Tomatoes

Although technically a fruit, tomatoes are categorized as vegetables. This is partly because of their lower carb and sugar content. In contrast, they’re high in vitamin A, which contributes to the maintenance of normal vision, and potassium, a mineral that plays a key role in normal muscle function. Enjoy them fresh, dried, or as a salsa, paste or sauce and reap all the benefits of this delicious fruit (or vegetable — you decide!).

1… Start to unwind and take more time for yourself

The days are getting longer, warmer, and a little bit lazier, so lets use it to unwind, calm down and find a sense of tranquility for the summer months. The last thing you want is to be stressed out at a family gathering or anxious at a festival you’ve been looking forward to all year. Go for a quiet early-evening walk, take some deep breaths and try to let the mind stop racing. Finding time to exercise and eat right is also key, so by the time summer rolls around, you can be in the right headspace to enjoy it before it’s too late.

Remember, getting ready for summer isn’t all about looking good, it’s about feeling good. As long as you’re happy and confident in yourself, you’re all set. If you’re struggling to get there, we hope these tips can help you find your summer vibes. Now, it’s time to start putting them into practice!
