What is 5-HTP?

5-HTP, or 5-Hydroxytryptophan, comes from the amino acid L-tryptophan, which can be converted into serotonin in the body. It’s not possible to get 5-HTP directly through food, although tryptophan is typically obtained from meat, fish and dairy. Supplemental 5-HTP is usually obtained through the Griffonia simplicifolia plant — the main source of 5-HTP supplements.

Put simply, 5-HTP allows the body to convert the amino acid L-tryptophan into serotonin. For this chemical reaction to occur, the body also needs nutrients like vitamins (particularly B2, B3 & B6), magnesium and zinc. So, if your body is lacking any of these nutrients, then taking 5-HTP supplements alone may not be as effective.
